String & Bow

“String & Bow”

“String & Bow,” released on To You, 2018. Features Phillip Hammond on violin.

I step into black flats
and snap the buckles
and there’s the telltale stripes
of white dust
on my knuckles
I’m ready to pretend
I’m someone else
she who chose differently
possibilities fade before me
chorus:
I can’t help but feel
I’m taking someone else’s role
but if I fake it hard enough
then no one will need to know
that I’m not of here
I’m not of the string and bow
but if I want to be
is it enough to make it so?

I check each small box
with slate gray graphite
but I see before me
four strings lined
pulled tight
it almost fits me
this elusive harmony
but something detracting
I can’t compete
ever persisting
chorus
heartstrings
believe me
I’ve plucked and strummed before
heartstrings
ain’t the same thing
I’m new to your orchestral world
heartstrings
down-bowing
pizzicato, double stop, vibrato
heartstrings
you
underestimate me
dedication, determination
don’t you know?
heartstrings
believe me
I’ve plucked and strummed before
heartstrings
ain’t the same thing
I’m new to your orchestral world
heartstrings
down-bowing
pizzicato, double stop, vibrato
heartstrings
you
underestimate me
dedication, determination
don’t you know?
chorus
ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
